My husband and I have been raising alpacas since 2004. What are alpacas, you ask?? They are a camelid, a relative of the camel. They are raised for their fiber. We have 100+ alpacas and have spent nine years breeding for better and better fleece. We now have some alpacas with fleece tested in the top 1 to 4 % in the country! Alpaca is 5-8 times warmer than wool. It is stronger than wool, water resistant, hypoallergenic (No lanolin), no "itch" factor as it has no scales like wool, and absolutely will not burn. It is a wonderful fiber, the "fiber of the gods" according to the South American peoples who raise them. It makes beautiful products, make for "against the skin" things like baby hats and scarves, hats, sweaters, socks, and etc. We are selling our yarn and roving as well as our raw fiber for spinners and even the "thirds" from the lower legs for rugs and house insulation.
